A Senior Mechanical Engineer uses engineering expertise to contribute to the design and development of new products. A strategic thinker who looks not only at the stated problem but at the space around it.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Engineering / Design
o Accountable for technical elements of project execution for Advanced Engineering and NPD projects. This includes integration of components and assemblies, intellectual property and standards compliance.
o Design components using manufacturing processes such as die castings, plastic injection molding, forgings, powder metal, sheet metal stampings and screw machine parts.
o Perform a wide variety of calculations and software aided analysis in the following areas: Mechanical stress analysis, drop analysis, complex tolerance and fit analysis, FEA, statics and dynamics, and a variety of machine element design.
o Analyze, evaluate and select from design execution alternatives to best meet specification objectives and implement designs into mass production.
o Conduct tool and product components teardowns; analyze competitive tool designs.
o Support resolving technical issues as they come up during engineering and qualification builds.
• Manufacturing Process Development:
o Develop innovative solutions; implement sustainable, robust and reliable complex manufacturing processes.
o Strong analytical skills, knowledge and experience in process evaluation tools: Design of Experiments (DOE), FMEA, PFMEA, statistical data analysis, risk analysis, flow layout and other related engineering tools.
o Research and evaluate new technologies and breakthrough processes to accelerate competitive manufacturing advantage.
o Exhibit vision and foresight to test the extremes of a design.
• Manufacturing / Suppliers
o Interacts extensively with manufacturing plants and outside suppliers to achieve project goals.
o Work with suppliers to develop part/product specifications that meet performance requirements while also falling within manufacturing process capability.
o Make component material or process recommendations. Review product designs for manufacturability.
o As part of project team, contribute in development of reliability/quality tools such as critical to quality matrix (QFD), process control plans, and work instruction etc.
o Work with reliability engineering, product management and test lab to create and review test procedures and equipment for new to company and existing product categories.
o Work with the rapid prototype team and test lab to create and test prototypes.
o Help coordinating testing for engineering and qualification builds with suppliers and test labs.
• Project Management
o Identify technical risks on projects and come up with risk reduction plans
o Schedule, develop agendas for, facilitate and document project meetings (technical meetings)
o Track project schedule to ensure adherence to timelines; keep team informed on project technical risks and issues.
o Occasionally make formal presentations regarding project status.
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Five years of related experience (preferred)
• CAD Skill Level: 3D CAD
• Geometric Tolerancing: thorough understanding
