Job Description

The Tooling Designer is responsible for providing tooling and parts necessary to meet production standards and schedules.

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform work per work instructions
  • Design and build tooling
  • Assemble tooling and troubleshoot effective use of new tooling and fixturing
  • Order supplies as necessary for sharpening equipment.
  • Operate and setup equipment to maintain specifications and independently adjust for variations
  • Perform necessary functions to prepare work stations to meet requirements
  • Perform preventative maintenance per requirements
  • Use tool room equipment to sharpen various tools, drill bits, and cutters
  • Welding, brazing and soldering and use of hand power tools to complete tasks
  • Order stock material for tool room and make up hydraulic hoses
  • Use tool room equipment to mill, drill, grind, bore, and taps to build, repair or modify tools or fixtures
  • Work with steel suppliers and other suppliers for cost reduction
  • Use tool room equipment to heat treat work pieces to proper specification
  • Inspect the hardness with appropriate testing tools
  • Install completed work piece on production equipment and prove function
  • Work with engineers on design of tools/fixtures
  • Perform complex layout work and manufacture tools/fixtures from scratch
  • Interpret results to meet specifications
  • Layout and inspection of complex fixtures involving use of trigonometry principles
  • Use CAD and CAM programs
  • Troubleshoot machining or assembly processes and recommend design improvements
  • Adhere to all safety requirements in the work area
  • Practice 5Ss

 Physical Demands

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Repetitive motion
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds
  • Frequent bending, stooping, pushing and pulling of parts and containers
  • Able to work in various temperature conditions

 Knowledge, Skils and Abilities

  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions as well as drawings and blueprints
  • Advance math skills (trigonometry)
  • Use of appropriate inspection equipment
  • Knowledge of applicable jigs, fixtures, index plates and grinding wheels
  • Computer proficiency
  • Knowledge of cutting tools
  • Create technical sketches

 Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years Machine Shop Technical School or 5 years tool room experience preferred
