Job Description

The Buyer/Planner is responsible for planning, prioritizing, and expediting product families assigned along with their associated raw materials. Create and publish production schedules that consider normal and promotional demand, plant capacity, product mix, and material availability that ensures on-time delivery to our customers. Manage all day-to-day activities relating to raw materials assigned.


Provides leadership over moderate to complex projects and participates in Lean objectives and initiatives.


Due to the nature of this position, interaction with all departments throughout the organization is common in addition to collaboration with corporate counterparts.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and plan production for finished goods and subassemblies, and accompanying raw materials, based on defined run strategies, equipment, labor and raw material availability. Consider distribution stocking levels, backorders, direct customer orders, and inter-company requirements
    • Collaborate with Corporate Supply/Demand Planning
      • Promotion coordination and execution
      • Participate in Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP)
        • Review capacity and identify time periods when capacity could impact Operations ability to meet demand or need for additional work
    • Actively support cradle to grave product management reducing risk of supply disruption and end of life excess and obsolescence
      • Materials liaison for NPD planning, product discontinuance, and their execution
      • Coordinates the planning and implementation of Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and deviations
    • Continuously monitor the production plan to ensure internal and external material availability, reconciling any known disruptions ahead of the production start date
    • Maintain manufacturing orders (i.e.: add/delete, date/quantity changes, transfer/add/reverse)
    • Assist in achieving customer service levels and Weeks of Stock (WOS) goals
    • Actively participate in weekly production meetings
  • Purchase Order Management
    • Release, confirm, reschedule, and cancel raw material purchase orders for product families assigned, managing all day-to-day activities
    • Order MRO related materials
    • Coordinate the return of non-conforming raw materials to suppliers
  • Lead and administer inventory initiatives and implement best practices
    • Maintain proper inventory levels, recommend and preserve safety stock for raw materials
    • Assist in achieving inventory turnover goals
      • Develop production run strategies and WIP buffer inventory
      • Evaluate safety stock for WIP and raw materials
      • Collaborate with suppliers on Kanban, VMI, Vending, and Consigned Inventory
      • Collaborate with Operations on Kanban, visual management and replenishment
  • Super User and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for ERP System and Materials Processes and Procedures
  • Personal development to include continuously updating skills related to Lean, Supply Chain and inventory management and control best practices
